SMAIAS has also carried in-depth studies of agricultural production patterns, highlighting the nuanced shifts in land use and productivity, and identifying the gradual rise of output in some crops. This information is used as a key reference by various national and international development agencies.
This research work has sensitised the agrarian reform strategy debates to address the vital problems of inputs and financial constraints, the need to strengthen input-output markets, and called for greater recognition and support to the smaller scale producers. SMAIAS has conducted the most extensive and detailed research studies into the farm labour problem. These have enabled objective analysis of the labour relations and employment question over the past decade.
